PIERRE, S.D. - Sports bettors in South Dakota will be happy to see the results of the Senate vote today. With an 18-14 vote, Senate Joint Resolution 2 was passed and will now be given to the House for debate.
Although, it's important to note that if the resolution continues to advance it would not be automatically signed into law. Instead, voters in South Dakota will have the ability to choose whether or not they will allow the gambling town of Deadwood to offer sports wagering on the 2020 ballot.
Another important factor to keep in mind is that this resolution would only allow for physical sportsbooks and not online or mobile wagering in S.D. This has made some politicians wonder if the revenues to come from the activity are worth the trouble to regulate it.
But, the passing of the resolution mostly signifies that state officials, such as South Dakota Senator Troy Heinert, would rather leave it in the community’s hands to decide.
“If they want sports betting, let them have it,” Heinert said.
